All Aboard for the Official Eurovision App

Once more Peak Performance Apps GmbH supported the European Broadcast Union (EBU) as official app partner at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Again, the European TV audience was given the opportunity to easily vote for their favourite act out of the 43 participating countries.

“ALL ABOARD” – The official Second Screen App under a new theme According to the overarching theme “All Aboard”, the Eurovision Song Contest App functioned as a highly usable contact point for the contest’s fans. Within this Second Screen offer, the European viewers once again had the chance to comfortably vote for their favoured performance during the two semi-finals on the 8th and 10th of May as well as during the Grand Final on the 12th of May. The app is still provided free of charge for Android and iOS users in their stores. But there is more to the app than just an easy way to vote. With the official Second Screen Option, the Eurovision-experience becomes even more exciting: The Eurovision Song Contest App not only accompanies the audience parallelly during the Live Shows, but additionally offers a Live Stream as well as fascinating news about the participants, their home countries and the performed songs. Again, the “Favourite-Heart” enabled fans to highlight their preferred contestant for the upcoming voting phase. The popular OSRAM Light Voting was part of the official app once more, too. During the acts’ performances, the audience could influence the colour that illuminated Lisbon’s landmarks. Depending on the collective vote, the monuments gleamed in a variety of beautiful shades. Furthermore, the value of the app was not limited to its usage during the Live Shows. Exclusive background information with current news, various videos and galleries about the artists before and after the event were provided to the Eurovision Fans. App users were also able to enhance their own pictures with the beloved selfie filters. And if one cannot get enough of this year’s great performances, all songs were ready to be downloaded via the integrated music shop.

Peak Performance Apps in Europe’s Top 10 For the first time in Eurovision history, the audience voting of a national pre-selection final took place exclusively via the official app. The Czech viewers of “Eurovision Song CZ” were able to retrieve additional information about the nominated artists and their songs for a period of two weeks. This was accompanied by Real Time Video Voting to identify the Czech audience’s favourite act. With the highest overall score, Mikolas Josef and his song “Lie To Me” won the ticket to represent the Czech Republic in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon. There, he not only succeeded to qualify for the Grand Final, but reached a remarkable sixth place in the overall competition, which is one of the best results the Czech Republic ever scored. The innovative idea of a fully smartphone-based national pre-selection supported by Peak Performance Apps GmbH therefore turned out to be highly successful and promising. Further information about the Czech national pre-selection can be found here.

Performance during peak loads as key competence High-performance systems for the real-time processing of peak load traffic during major events like the Eurovision Song Contest are the key competence indicator. With more than 650,000 requests per second, the performance capacity of the official Eurovision platform was demonstrated once more during this year’s contest. Therefore, for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contests and participation via the app further growth in peak loads are expected.
